Colorado was the land of several Native American tribes. However, this was long before Europeans found their way into Colorado territory. Colorado tribes include the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Utes, and Shoshones.
Discovery of gold in the 1870s changed everything. Pike’s Peak Gold Rush followed soon after. Prospectors flushed into Colorado and Denver was born. Later boom towns sprang up. Below is a list of famous Colorado people:
- Gene Fowler
Eugene Devlan was born on March 8, 1890, in Denver, Colorado; USA. Before becoming a screenwriter, Fowler was a newspaper reporter. He was known for; Call of the Wild (1935), What Price Hollywood (1932) and others. He was married to Agnes Fowler, and they had three children.
He died on July 2, 1960, in Los Angeles, California USA.
- Ted Mack
He was born William Edward Maguiness on February 12, 1904, in Greely, Colorado; USA. He built himself a name as the host of The Original Amateur Hour. The show began as a radio production and ended airing on every major television network.
He was married to Ellen, and they both helped to raise several foster children. He died on July 12, 1976, aged 72 years.
- Tim Allen
He was born Timothy Alan Dick on June 13, 1953, in Denver, Colorado, USA to Martha Katherine and Gerald M Dick. Timothy is married to Jane Hajduk after divorcing his first wife, Laura Diebel, with whom he has one daughter Katherine ‘Kady’ Allen.
An actor, Tim Allen has featured in TV Series as well as movies. He is also a stand-up comedian. He has starred in Men are pigs (1990), Toy Story (1995) among others.
- Lon Chaney
Lon Chaney was born to deaf parents on April 1, 1883, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He dropped out of school at fourth grade to take care of his ailing mother. Lon got the early taste of theatre while working as a prop boy in his teens. In 1930 he used five different voices for a remake of his film The Unholy Three. In his last movie as he suffered from bronchial cancer and spent his final days at St. Vincent Hospital, Los Angeles.
On August 26, 1930, he died of a throat illness aged 47 years only.
- Scott Carpenter
Born on May 1, 1925, to Dr. M Scott Carpenter and Florence Kelso Noxon Carpenter, Scott Carpenter attended the University of Colorado from 1945 to 1949 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. His distinction came by being the first human to penetrate both inner and outer space, thereby acquiring the dual title Astronaut/Aquanaut. He died on October 10, 2013.
- Ruth Handler
Ruth handler was born to her Jewish parents on November 4, 1916, in Denver. She married Elliot Handler in 1938, and they later shifted to Los Angeles. They set up a small business and Ruth was handling the sales part. They then converted their business to a toy business, and Ruth helped in bringing forth an idea to improve the dolls. Her invention was severally shot down by her husband until she gathered materials to make the first toy she named Barbie. Ruth died in 2002 while undergoing surgery for colon cancer.
- Zachery Ty Bryan
He was on October 9, 1981, to his parents Jenny and Swight Bryan. He is married to Carol Matros, and together they have two children. He began his career in print and Television advertising. He is best known for playing the role of Tim Taylor’s son, Brad, on the TV series Home Improvement. He has also featured in the Fast and Furious.
- Eugene Fodor
Fodor was born in Denver Colorado on March 5, 1950. He started violin classes at the age of five years. Aged only ten years, Fodor made his debut with the Denver Symphony in a performance of the Bruch First Concerto. In 1972 he won the prestigious Paganini Competition. Eugene remained active in the new century but withdrew from concert performances in 2010. On February 26, 2011, he died of Cirrhosis.
- Paul Whiteman
He was a famous bandleader. Paul Whiteman (1890-1967) made significant contributions to Symphonic Jazz in the 1920s. He made his career debut as a violist with San Francisco Symphony. He labeled himself as King of Jazz and his music as Symphonic Jazz.
- Homer Lea
Homer Lea was born November 17, 1876, in Denver, Colorado, USA. He served as a US soldier and author. Homer used his knowledge of Japanese affairs to predict 30 years before World War II that there would be a U.S- Japanese war and described its early course. He died on November 1, 1912.
Those discussed above are heroes who have excelled in what they do or were doing. They brought honor to our state as well as the United States as a country. It is, therefore, an honor when one commits themselves to do what they know in passion. We can only acknowledge their efforts terming them as fallen soldiers.
