I have read dozens of novels since I was 14 years old. Some good, some bad, some I didn’t even bother to finish. But here are my top 5 novels of all time. Do note most of them are fantasy novels since I am a big fantasy fan.
- Dragonlance: Dragons of Summer Flame by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman – This is high fantasy at its finest. When I say high fantasy, it includes elves, dragons, wizards and the likes. This book is not your typical story though, it is full of intrigue, betrayal, and twists. Of course, that’s not to say it is without action and adventure. There are lots, and the characters both old and new are well written. The plot is basically a new evil has arrived to destroy the world. Both the heroes and villains have to set aside their differences, join forces to battle this new threat.
But as a warning to those who might want to read this book, this belongs to a series of books called Dragonlance. You need to read six books prior to the events here to fully enjoy it. That is what makes this book enjoyable though, it is a culmination of past events and characters. Think of it as the latest Avengers movie, you will appreciate it more if you have watched the other Marvel movies beforehand. And by doing so, the experience is sweeter.
This book is, in fact, the thickest(most page count) among the Dragonlance books, and even with that, I read it three times because it is so good.
- Forgotten Realms: The Halfling’s Gem by RA Salvatore – Another fantasy world, very much like Dragonlance is the Forgotten Realms. It is also considered high-fantasy. But unlike the Dragonlance series, Forgotten Realms is not focused on dragons, and have many different authors writing many characters throughout its world. Dragonlance is mostly based on specific characters and the main story is written by two specific authors.
This particular book is by the author RA Salvatore. He is responsible for one of the most popular characters in this world- Drizzt Do Urden, a dark elf looking for redemption. His Drizzt books(or Dark Elf series as it is known) is so popular that it has span to more than two dozen books and he has become New York Times Best Selling author multiple times. Salvatore is known for his detailed writings, especially during fight scenes. You can almost picture every move in slow motion, it is THAT detailed.
The Halfling’s Gem is the third book of his Dark Elf series. One of his earlier works. Why I love it so much is because the story is intimate- just a small group of characters going on a personal quest, yet it is so well done it is epic. One of the series main villain(and a fan favorite character)- Artemis Entreri, is also introduced in this book. I guess it is also for sentimental reasons I love this book.
- Dragonlance: Test of the Twins by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman – another book set in the Dragonlance series is Test of the Twins. And like my favorite book, Dragons of Summer Flame, it is written by the same authors, and have almost the same characters. It is set at an earlier timeline though, and the story is focused on two brothers taking different paths, with one of them being a popular character in modern fantasy, a wizard named Raistlin Majere. It is a story of betrayal and redemption, of love and war.
Like Dragons of Summer Flame, you need to read previous books to really appreciate it. It is the third book of the Dragonlance Legends Series.
