If you read my article about my top three favorite books, you would not be surprised why I chose two of the characters here. They are chosen straight from those three books I mentioned. So with that said…
Raistlin Majere – My favorite character of all time. One of the main characters in the DragonLance series, a mage(wizard) with a dark past and inner struggle. He is such a complex character because he seemed torn throughout, he wants to do what is right, but he is also clearly blinded by ambition and bitterness. That is what makes him such a popular character among readers. He is not a one-dimensional character you often read about. He cannot be classified as a hero nor a villain, and I do not think he is even considered an anti-hero. As I said, just a complex character throughout, which makes him more endearing.
His character design is also very good, a frail man with long silver hair, who is constantly sick. He is very wise, compassionate, but also cynical and cold. Not your usual wizard with a long beard with all too good or too evil character.
Artemis Entreri – A character from the Forgotten Realms world, particularly from RA Salvatore’s Dark Elf series, Artemis Entreri is an assassin and the archenemy of the series’ hero, Drizzt. He started to like your usual assassin-mercenary type who is out for the money. But as many books passed, his character evolved. He turned into an anti-hero who is motivated with hate.
What makes me like him is that he is so composed and calculated. He hardly shows emotions and always want to get the job done no matter what.
Roland Deschain – Okay. So this is not from my favorite books. He is the main character in the Dark Tower series of Stephen King. Why I like him is he reminds me of Clint Eastwood’s western films- a cowboy-like character who have few words, yet have this aura of calm and cool in him. He is rugged, tough, disciplined, yet sympathetic. Exactly what you expect from an anti-hero. And just like most anti-heroes, you can sense a great pain inside of him, which makes him even more likable.
Batman/Bruce Wayne – You probably heard of this guy especially with the popularity of superhero movies. Why I like him is he is so dedicated to his craft. Too dedicated that it makes him scary and dangerous. I admire how he managed to reach peak human capabilities, not just physically but mentally. He is considered one of the best fighters and one of the smartest men in the world. Of course, he is also suffering a great deal of inner turmoil from his parents’ death which makes him a bit unstable. Bruce Wayne is depicted as almost too good but also with great character flaws, which makes an interesting character in my opinion.
So there you go, my favorite characters in literature. If you noticed, most of them almost have an anti-hero charm in them. I guess those are the type of characters I get captivated with.
